The importance of training

denali approach

Training is something that I feel is very important and is an essential factor needed for success at whatever it is you do. There are so many benefits that stem from training. Through it, we can become physically stronger, faster, and more agile. In my opinion, however, the greatest benefit of training, is what it does for us mentally.

Training requires discipline: to wake up, and work hard, despite whether or not you want to stay in bed and sleep, or are not feeling up to it. The drive to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, no matter how tough it feels at the time, is the essential challenge, and the benefit.

Through training, we build mental toughness. But what does that mean? To be mentally tough is to resist the urge to give up in the face of failure; to maintain focus and determination in pursuit of one’s goals and to emerge from adversity even stronger than before.

Mental toughness is something that can help us all, whether it is in combat, climbing a mountain, running a race, or overcoming a difficult situation that life throws us.

In a way, mental toughness is directly related to resilience. Resilience is our ability to bounce back from any setback that life may throw at us. It is a mindset and something we can control. We all experience setbacks in life but its how we choose to deal with them that will determine the future. When we are faced with adversity we can choose to throw in the towel or continue the fight. We can feel sorry for ourselves, or we can feel grateful for living one more day. Towards this capacity, optimism goes a long way. Try to always look for something positive, no matter how unlikely. Optimism allows us to look at a setback as something temporary and one that we can overcome.

In the middle of anything that is difficult, we have the option of quitting, slowing down, or changing course.

My life has been about ignoring that option.
